After running their M8's for three seasons, McLaren finally made a real M8 available to their customers in 1971. The M8E was a close copy of the M8B but with a low wing to meet new regulations.

M8E 80-04
80-04 was wrecked in the 71 Can Am by Vic Elford. The car was rebuilt with a new chassis and sold to Alan Johnson who raced it in the 72 Can-Am. It was sold to Cuddy who ran the 73 Can Am. Merle Brennan bought ex-Cuddy car as a parts car for the D-F he bought from Kaplan. When he found that none of the parts would fit, he parted it out. The chassis ended up in San Francisco where it was rebuilt with Lola pieces. Chuck Haines had it rebuilt to "E" specs. The first chassis minus front bulkhead is in New Zealand.

Bob Barton has the chassis and the car is currently unrestored. (Paul Canary also claims to have this car through lineage he purchased from Bill Kasmer. He has applied this lineage to an M8F he built)
